Sunday, October 17, 03:00pm (4 hours) - Ignacy Jan Paderewski - Musician and Statesman
Description: Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860–1941), a virtuoso pianist, composer, statesman (the first Prime Minister of independent Poland after World War I), humanitarian and orator, acclaimed as a 'Modern Immortal' by his contemporaries, gave seven performances in Rochester. Rochester was the last American city to host his public performance. He received a state burial at Arlington National Cemetery. In 1992, Paderewski's body was returned to Poland and was buried in the Royal Crypt of the Warsaw Cathedral in a ceremony attended by the presidents of Poland and the United States. A special program to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Ignacy Jan Paderewski will include Paderewski's compositions played by Igor Lipinski, Eastman School of Music, readings of Paderewski's letters and press reviews about him, and excerpts of films. The event is co-sponsored by the Skalny Center of Polish and Central European Studies, University of Rochester, the Polish Heritage Society of Rochester, and Nazareth College.
